Gain Creators / Outcomes

Schools can deliver entrepreneurship education programmes, with enterprising teachers who are prepared to motivate and guide their students. Learning of teachers is supported with high quality materials and there is a low risk for them to fail. A consequence of the training is also the creation of a good network of teachers dealing with entrepreneurship education.

Implementation Method

Schools are informed about the training options by e-mails. Mass media is used for informing students (and their parents) about the opportunity to take part in practical entrepreneurship programmes. If students ask the school information about the programmes, school turns to JA Estonia for the training. When a teacher has passed the methodological training (start point), she/he will be in JA mailing list and get information about all following trainings offered.

Teacher trainings for JA entrepreneurship programmes

This practise was developed by JA Estonia to fulfil the need of teachers involved in entrepreneurship education programmes in schools, as universities and training centres did not have any training on this particular topic and the demand in schools was high.

The teacher training activities offered by JA Estonia started with methodological trainings for different programmes (mostly 2 days). After that, a basic economics course was added for those teachers who do not have any economics or entrepreneurship background (1 day). Advanced trainings organised in partnership with universities and business specialists for teachers of all levels follow (3 days per year). Together with this a winter school (2 days) with lectures and teacher-to-teacher trainings is offered and in June teachers have the possibility to take part in a summer school (4 days) together with theirs students about how to form relationships and build trust. Extra trainings are planned for student company teachers and individual consulting is offered permanently.

This wide range of activities to train the teachers showed good results and can be exported in any country.

Pains / Challenges

Not all schools have teachers experienced in entrepreneurship education programmes and/or with special education background. Local business people who come to the classroom tend to see the situation too much only from their point of view and wider picture is needed. Teachers are afraid to start teaching entrepreneurship without being aware about the methods and tools they can use with the students.

Additional information:To deliver the trainings, JA Estonia cooperates with regional companies, business centres and universities. Association of teachers of economics is also involved. The activities are modular and flexible, meaning that they can be customised accordingly to local needs.
