An emotion based assessment methodology that measure the effect of entrepreneurial teaching or the effect of a specific entrepreneurial method - from a student perspective. The stakeholders can gain an increased understanding of how students develop their entrepreneurial competences and how entrepreneurial education can be used to increase student achievement and motivation in school.

More evidence-based research on the effects of entrepreneurial education are needed from a student perspective, especially at primary and secondary schools, to gain a robust scientific foundation to lean on when developing school practice. The research needs to have a clear connection to current international research in the field and a proven research methodology.

The method is based on the “proxy” theory of how people develop entrepreneurial competencies, stipulating that emotional events can be considered intermediaries (i.e. proxies) between teachers’ instructional design and students’ developed entrepreneurial competencies. Such an approach helps to link certain kinds of emotional events that students experience in an educational setting to an entrepreneurial learning process. Pupils and students can report both positive and negative emotions in connection to different entrepreneurial activities and send these to their teachers. In this sense it becomes possible to send formative feedback both ways. This also makes it possible to track which types of activities the pupils/students engage in, and which emotions these spur.

By using an app-based action methodology for assessing the impact of the educational initiative, we can make serious attempts to open the “black box” of entrepreneurial learning. The methodology makes it possible to uncover links between any given teaching approach and resulting learning outcomes.

Previously applied strategies to measure the effects of entrepreneurial education have had difficulties in producing convincing evidence of effects. Moreover, there are very few effects studies that adopt a student experience perspective.

Possible use of the app – beyond research:

  • Teaching. The app can improve the day-to-day communication between students and teachers, and can also be used as a digital reflection tool for the students and as a formative assessment tool for teachers
  • Management & Development. An app can also be used as a tool for teacher peer-learning or systematic quality work. It can also help many of the more peripheral actors in education, such as school developers, principals, administrators, politicians, evaluators etc.
